Description

When Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for his own English translation of Gitanjali (Song Offerings), he became the first non-European to do so, achieving immediate fame.Translations in other languages of this and other works followed. Reams were written on his writings, and his personality. As aworld citizen, Tagore aimed at bringing the ‘East’ and the ‘West’ together for an inclusive humanism. His was assumed to be the Voice of India—indeed of Asia and the colonised world. The Nobel Prize gave him the authority to speak, and the intellectual elite of many countries listened.

The editors of Rabindranath Tagore:  One Hundred Years of Global Reception had asked Tagore experts worldwide to narrate how the Bengali author was received from 1913 until our time. Their thirty-five essays arranged by region or language group inform us about translations, the impact of Tagore’s visits, and his subsequent standing in the world of letters. Tagore’s reception while often enthusiastic was not always adulatory, occasionally undergoing dramatic metamorphoses, and diverse political and social milieus and cultural movements responded to him differently. This nuanced global reception is for the first time dealt with comprehensively and systematically in this volume presented as a work of reference. These essays remind us that Tagore’s works keep being reprinted or retranslated for he continues to be relevant to modern readers.

Miercuri, 16 aprilie, apare împreună cu Jurnalul Naţional al 165-lea volum al colecţiei Biblioteca pentru Toţi, Isabel şi apele diavolului.

Romanul ilustrează continua tensiune a spiritului lui Eliade între magic şi mistic, între voinţă şi har, între autorealizarea eului şi pierderea de sine în Dumnezeu, vizibilă şi în foiletoanele pe care le trimitea Cuvântului, în ciuda faptului că Itinerariul spiritual (1927) părea să fi închis ciclul evoluţiei sale de la teosofie la ortodoxie. Nehotarârea de a se desprinde pe de-a-ntregul din orizontul îndumnezeirii magice, al creării sufletului nemuritor prin voinţă şi efort propriu, a primit hrană nouă odată ajuns în India. Metafizica realistă de care vorbeşte în roman se dovedeşte a fi aproape un sinonim pentru tantra. Ea este pusă în termenii manifestării realului prin joc şi a creaţiei prin logos, aşa cum sunt înţelese de filosofia indiană (mai precis, aşa cum o înţelegea Eliade atunci).

Mircea Eliade (1907–1986) was one of the twentieth century’s foremost students of religion and cultural environments. This book examines the emergence, function, and value of religion and myth in his work.
Nicolae Babuts, Robert Ellwood, Eric Ziolkowski, John Dadosky, Robert Segal, Mac Linscott Ricketts, Douglas Allen, and Liviu Bordaş examine Eliade’s views on the interaction between the sacred and the profane. Each explores Eliade’s phenomenological approach to the study of religion and myth. They show that modern rites of initiation, cultural activities, and spectacles like bullfighting, film, and, perhaps surprisingly, reading and writing, all harken back to the archetypal structures of the mythical imagination. Perhaps the greatest achievement of Eliade’s phenomenological approach is that it reveals what we have in common with pre-Socratic man: the mind’s structural capacity to endow objects and events with spiritual values and meanings.
As a study of Eliade’s concept of the mythic imagination, the book posits an analogy between the myths of the past and modern imitations. The authors suggest that in spite of their differences and their separate historical sources, myths represent basic structures of human consciousness. This book is essential reading for all students of religion, philosophy, and literature.
